When you are a spouse, parent, sibling, or loved one of a military member who has been accused of misconduct, you may have no idea how you can help your loved one to get through this difficult time. It’s important to understand what to do – and not do – in order to assist them. Here’s what you should know.

Stay in Control of Your Emotions

When you find out that your loved one has been accused of misconduct, your first instinct is likely to get mad, sad, or feel betrayed. You may even be wondering how their situation may impact you. But regardless of whether you believe that they have behaved in an improper manner, it’s key that you remain in control of your emotions. Be sure to allow yourself to feel your feelings – whatever they may be – so that you can process them and then help.

Provide Support

In addition to your own feelings, there’s no doubt that your loved one who is under investigation is scared, overwhelmed, and stressed out by their circumstances. Therefore, one of the best things that you can do is provide support to them whether it be emotional, financial, or both. Just be aware that this is not your fight. Do not take on the legalities of their situation and decide to handle it for them – that won’t do either of you any good.

Be Patient Throughout the Process

While not ideal, the process concerning allegations of misconduct is not a quick one. It involves several motions, investigations, and negotiations. Be aware that this could take upwards of weeks – if not months to come to a resolution. By remaining patient with your loved one throughout the process you can greatly help them.

Hire an Experienced Attorney

It’s important to bear in mind that military law is not the same thing as civilian law. Neither is what is at stake. Military members who are found guilty can lose many aspects of their life as they know it. They may lose their livelihood, their support, and ultimately their career. Therefore, it’s key to consult with a military defense attorney who can help to defend their rights. You can help to put your loved one in touch with a qualified military attorney.
